What is Affiliate Marketing?

Before I start speaking, have a look at this picture first:

The idea is simple. You pick what interests you, invite people into your realm of interests and you can earn revenue by giving people items/products that they can purchase within the interests that he has.

The best part about this? You don’t need to have your own product! You can essentially promote other people’s products, but get a little commission for having led that customer to buy that product.

Okay, it may sound confusing, and it definitely did when I first started this. So, let me give you an example.

Let’s use an iPhone, as it’s relatable for everyone.

Say a new iPhone comes out and you buy it by going to a store or online. You enjoy the features and recommend it to your friend. He agrees to purchase it too and buys it off Amazon.

Who gets paid here?

Apple and Amazon! Even though you were the one recommending the product to your friend.

Imagine if you could earn money every time you recommend a product to someone. What if when your friend bought an $700 iPhone and you earned $50 because of it?

That’d be cool, right?

Well, that’s the idea behind affiliate marketing. Remember, it’s not just iPhones. It is every product that you can think of.

Even Hot Wheels! The guy below recommends Hot Wheels to people, and through his YouTube channel gets paid working online!

Look, whatever you are interested in, you can find a product that you can recommend to others and make a commission out of it. This is what affiliate marketing is all about. And that’s why it’s such a great way to get your hands on it.

Now, you ready for something even better?

What if instead of just being able to recommend something you like to your friend, you are able to put it in front of billions of people? Yep, bigger than any sizable crowd you will ever see in person.

You probably already guessed it.

It’s the internet. You literally have over 3 billion people use the internet daily. Can you imagine that?  Even if you were to get 2 commissions a day worth $50, you make $3000 a month!

And that is if you only get 2 commissions a day.

If you are really willing to put in the effort, I’m sure you realize that the amount of income that you can earn is limitless. It’s only down to your imagination and your effort.

I’m going to break up the parties involved in affiliate marketing so you getter a better grasp of it. There are 3 parties:

  1. Product Owner/Seller
  2. Consumer
  3. Affiliate Marketer

Product Owner/Seller

A product owner is someone that owns the product. In the case of iPhone, Apple owns the product. In the case of this shoe, Nike owns the product.

A product owner can sell their products in a few ways.

First is by selling it via their physical store. A Nike shoe can be bought from any Nike store that you enter in. They get customers by having people walk by and liking their product, or if they are a repeat customer, they come in to buy because they liked the previous product they bought from Nike.

That’s not new.

Second, is from third party stores. Often you see big brands give their products to other stores so that they can get a bigger reach of customers. I just went in a Virgin Megastore in the mall yesterday and saw iPhone 12 being promoted, even though it isn’t their product directly.

Third, they can sell in in their website online. Just like the Nike shoe that is being sold online in the Nike website, a lot of the products have their own website where they can display their products.

Lastly, they can sell it via another website. A great example is Amazon who hosts millions of different products that aren’t theirs to broaden the reach of potential customers for the product owners.

Now, this leads me to Sellers.

A seller, in this case, is someone that is selling an item that isn’t theirs, like Amazon or ClickBank.

Think of them like a ‘Shopping Mall’ who host tons and tons of different products for people to buy from.

Consumer

This is pretty self-explanatory. A consumer is someone that buys the product off of either product owners, sellers or affiliate marketers.

If you buy anything online, you’re a consumer. Pretty straightforward.

Affiliate Marketer

An affiliate marketer is someone that promotes the product owners’ products either via their direct website, or via the sellers website.

This is for those that don’t necessarily have a product to sell and want to go through a HASSLE FREE experience while being able to run a business.

Take a look at few examples here.

You can see the commission ranges from as low as $2 all the way up to $2000.

Okay, hopefully now the concept of affiliate marketing make sense to you. Does it?

This is an honest question. If you have questions make sure to write down a comment below or go to my ‘Ask Me’ page.

How to become an Online Merchant?

If you are someone that wants to sell your own product and find affiliate marketers, this is for you. If you DON’T have a product and want to sell other people’s product, you can click here which will take you down to a section just for Affiliate Marketers.

You should have a product if you want affiliate marketers to help you sell that product.

What kind of product do you want? To answer this, reflect inwards and ask yourself what is it that I enjoy.

And then, you need to know whether that product will be sellable to people. And what kind of things that people actually want in that product.

For example, if you want to sell a fan, see what kind of things are missing in the current types of fan and counter the challenges or ‘cons’ they feel are in the current products.

I just Googled ‘Fans’ and went to the first option in Amazon. This is what came up.

If you scroll all the way down, you’ll see a section for customer feedback where they will have positives and negatives.

Now, if you are wanting to sell fans to the public, try to make sure these challenges that people are having are sorted. This will allow more affiliate marketers to want to sell your product.

Here’s My Top Recommended Training     >>>

Here’s the thing.

Affiliate Marketers want to have good products when they try to promote them.

If you don’t have good products, they go fetch someone that does. They care about whether the product can sell to customers because that’s how they would make money.

Don’t think that anyone would sell your products. No! This is not the case!

They need to represent themselves for your brand! That means they are putting their image at risk, if the product doesn’t solve all the needs of the clients.

Another important thing to note.

Make sure your products actually do what you say they are going to do!

If affiliate marketers or customers realize that your products has a misrepresentation in information, the customers will go. The affiliate marketers will go. And worse, you might get red flagged with negative comments all over the internet so you will never get any new customers.

Okay Parmi, I got a good product. Tell me what to do next.

Once you have a good product, you need to find places online where you can sell that product.

Amazon is a good place to start as it’s the biggest marketplace in the world.

Amazon Seller

You can go in the above link which will allow you to become an Amazon seller which means you can post your products online and earn revenue every time someone buys your product. Amazon already has tons and tons of affiliate marketers so you wouldn’t necessarily need to seek out individual affiliates.

Here’s another one called ClickBank.

ClickBank Seller

Similar to Amazon, ClickBank also already has affiliates so you don’t need to do any hunting. Ebay is another platform where you can sell items.

What do I need?

Another BIG thing to remember! Regardless of how many seller accounts you sign yourself up in, you NEED to have a website for yourself!

Think about it yourself if you’ve ever bought something from Amazon.

When you see what brand the product is, do you typically not try to Google the product brand to see if it’s legit, good quality etc.? The same applies to your product.

Now with creating a website, if you have no clue about it, I’d suggest you check out Wealthy Affiliate. It not only provides hosting and domain coverage, it also gives you an easy tour on how easy it is nowadays to create a website brand for your product.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a tech savvy guy to create a website. It’s just knowing simple methodologies – which is why I’d recommend Wealthy Affiliate as it’s simple to understand and they also have multiple coaches (including me) to help you along the way.

Your website will be able to have a brand which will attract customers. And once you have a website, you can have items to be sold in your website, in third party websites plus you can have affiliate marketers do your selling!

Big bonus when you have your own website. You can avoid any fees that incurs in Amazon, ClickBank, Ebay or any other websites. This would be able to give higher commissions to your affiliate marketers and provide more profit for yourself! It’s a win-win.

Don’t be too overwhelmed by this. Get started with the FREE signup for Wealthy Affiliate so you avoid the pitfalls.

Things to Look Out For

Don’t fall for SCAMS!

Period.

With internet having so much stuff online, I see many people falling prey for scams that are out there.

If you see anywhere where it says:

  • You can make money IMMEDIATELY  —> SCAM
  • You don’t need to put in ANY effort –> SCAM
  • You need to pay THOUSANDS of Dollars to learn –> SCAM

I fell victim of it myself multiple times before I finally found something that worked for me. I want to make sure you don’t fall victim either.

Any programs that you select, never go for the glamor.

A program that is all about glamor and getting you money quickly only gets money quickly to one person. Guess who? The person telling you so. Not you!

A little TIP..

When you do get started with affiliate marketing, don’t expect it to be easy nor quick. If you’re a complete newbie, it could take a few months before you start making any revenue and will definitely take at least 6 months to a year of consistent work to get a good revenue flowing.

But it is 100% possible. Look at my friend Eric, who was able to generate $4k/month results in just a year. It’s not for everyone, but if you think it might for you, feel free to check out the training in this website – it’s the exact training all the successful online marketers took!

How to Get Started in Affiliate Marketing?

This is probably the biggest mistake that people make. So take careful notes here.

To start in affiliate marketing, you need to find products that you’re going to market. So, you need to begin by knowing what you topic you are interested in. Or, in affiliate marketing terms, what is your niche?

Even though you are not selling your product, it would be a lot enjoyable for you to learn more about things that you enjoy right?

Let me explain what I mean.

If you hate Baseball, but you choose to promote that topic, it would probably be hard for you to stick around and be successful. As I said before, this requires hard work and persistence.

If you like Baseball as a sport and you enjoy doing researching more on it, go with Baseball. If you like Tennis, go with Tennis. If you like Mickey Mouse, go with Micky Mouse. If you like Legos, go do Legos.

You might think I’m joking here. I’m DEAD serious.

Like I mentioned earlier in this article, there are over 3 billion people that use the internet daily. You will be able to find enough people in the internet that is interested in your topic where you can earn serious income. As I said earlier, even just 2 day can get you making $3000 a month. That’s if you don’t put in much effort at all.

So, finding Niche is your first step. It can be confusing. You can go at the training that I took to learn more here. All the following lessons is absolutely for FREE. Try it out without even leaving this website!

Just to be clear if you didn’t end up clicking in yourself. There is no gimmicks or trickery. You will be able to access all the 10 lessons above for FREE!

Once you figure out a niche, you move on to the next step. That is figuring out where your niche items are.

The easiest one could be Amazon that gives you easy affiliate links. You can go to Amazon Affiliate here and find out your products – but I’d recommend that you go through the first basic training here before you get started with affiliate links.

Affiliate links without TRAFFIC won't give you a penny!

My #1 Recommendation

I’ve talked about it a few times throughout this article but my recommended platform to really help you get started is Wealthy Affiliate.

Why?

Well, quite honestly because it is simple, clear, honest and FREE to get started. There is too much clutter in the internet nowadays that it’s hard to stay focused.

I’ll tell you what. When I wanted to get paid working online, I did a ton of research and even got scammed multiple times. I was even fooled for this ‘Win Money in Poker’ thing online where I had to put in $100 to be in the round. I lost that money in less than 5 minutes.

I looked at multiple different websites, but I didn’t seem to find something that I could test it out. Most of the good ones out there online always requires you to pay a certain amount of money before being able to get the training. Or it at least requires your credit card details.

Maybe I’m just cheap, but here was where my head was after I lost that $100 in the Poker thing.

If I can go into an Apple store and dabble around any iPhone I want before I buy it, why can’t I do that here? There must be something that I can get into that doesn’t require any credit card or payment.

This is when I found Wealthy Affiliate.

I’ll be honest, I was hesitant at first. But when I saw that it was free to sign up, I felt there was nothing to lose and I got in.

You get 10 free trainings, that I discussed above. You get unlimited 24/7 live chat support. Plus you get tons of people rooting you on every time you do something well or hit a milestone. There was a community there!

There was accountability.

There was support.

I enjoyed it so much immediately.

You can truly just go in and try it out. And heck, if don’t like it, you can just leave. Just like if you don’t like the new iPhone in the Apple store. And feel free to come back and tell me or shout at me here if it’s really bad.

You can get a full review of my views of Wealthy Affiliate here.  Feel free to ask me your question here or go to my ‘Ask Me’ page and I’ll be answering all your questions directly.

  1. Thanks for explaining this so well.

Don’t affiliate marketers need a domain name and website hosting? How do you determine a good domain name? With website hosting, how do you get started without using expensive website hosting. I seen web hosts charging $30 a month which is $360 a year.

How do I learn and do what I learn on a really low budget? I want to prove the concept before committing additional funds to it.

    Any advise?

    • Hi David,

Yes, in order to have a website, you do need a domain and a web hosting which is part of the reason I’ve recommended the training here in the article. The great thing about it is that is provides you with the hosting in the platform while training you how to be successful.

For the Domain Name, it depends on what your niche would be. If you have a niche ready, then you can look at some of the keywords that might be good for you for the topic that you want to build on. It’s all explained even within my other articles, so feel free to look through them. Also, I’m always here to help, so you can always throw down ideas for me to bounce off of.

Regarding budget, quite frankly, I was hesitant to spend anything at all when I started. That’s why a free session would be helpful, and you get that with Wealthy Affiliate. You can start off for free and check it out first. It’s $19 the first month and $49 thereafter – but you can make the call after you get started for free.

Hope this helped David! Remember, I’m always here to help you so feel free to reach out whenever.

  2. Thank you for this great article explaining the affiliate marketing program.  I’ve been doing it for a little over a year now and I LOVE IT!  It’s so much better than the 9-5 and so much more than making money.  I can work my own schedule (but, yes, you still have to work) and enjoy the creative process of writing (something I had never done before this) while helping companies with their bottom line AND helping people achieve their lifestyle goals.  And I can pay the bills while I’m doing it!

  3. Great info here on affiliate marketing! You’ve painted a nice picture with the graphics and bullet points. Hot Wheels were some of my favorite toys as a kid, and to think I could make a commission by promoting such a product is pretty outstanding. Great advice about scams as you can never be too careful out there. It’s clear that affiliate marketing is good for both the seller and the marketer, a win-win!

  4. Hi Parmi,

    Great article!

I’ve been looking at affiliate marketing for a while now. And I too have nearly fallen for the scams you mention. There are just so many of them with cheesy “10k month” videos. So I appreciate your honesty.

A lot of the “affiliate guru” people seem to be talking about Facebook a lot. Is that really quicker than doing it through a website/blog or is it just another scam?

I’m not prepared to spend the $100 a month they all seem to want to unveil the “secrets” so was just wondering what you think.

The costs at WA seem pretty reasonable, but are there any upsells once you get in there?

    Thanks again

    Adrian

    • Thanks for stopping by Adrian! I also appreciate you being very upfront here as well – oh I’ve seen those ‘cheesy videos’. Quite frankly, anyone that claims that you can make $10k/month without putting any effort is certainly a scam. Yes, it’s possible to make $10k/month, but only with hard work and consistency.

That’s part of the reason I joined WA in the first place. WA is free to join, and there is a premium bundle if you choose to continue the training. There are no upsells, there is just the premium+ that you can join after you get the hang of your online business – certainly not required for sure.

      Reply
      • Thanks for your comment Parmi. I have understood that much for sure by now that any quick money is not really possible with hard work. Okay, I will look into WA for now. Will you be able to help me once I start the training there?

  5. Definitely seems like affiliate marketing is a lucrative or profitable profession to get into. I’m sure there’s a lot to learn as I can see here from your article but it is surely a great way to produce passive income for people who are trying to build something online. This will be perfect. I will be looking further into it. Thank you for this

  6. Thank you for sharing this, gives me hope that I can make it trying to be an affiliate marketer! On paper it looks so easy but in reality, it does take time and effort to gain trust and credibility. But as long as you are consistent it is very possible! Thank you so much for sharing your review

  7. Having started on Wealthy Affiliate six weeks ago I can vouch for everything that Parmi says in this article. If you have an interest, and everyone has an interest, you can leverage that interest to make money online. Like playing video games? Gardening? Making money? Traveling? You can make money from any of those interests. In fact, the more interested you are in something, the more effective you will be at making money from it, because more interest = more motivation!

That being said, don’t expect overnight success. It takes diligent work. Success is possible if you have guidance and if you put in the work. Guidance can be provided by Wealthy Affiliate, at first for free, and afterwards for 50 bucks a month (which is awesome value for all that’s included in the subscription).  The work is up to you.

    Good article.

    • It’s great to hear that from you Erick! The fact that you’ve only been exposed to affiliate marketing for 6 weeks and realize that shows the depth of learning and training that you’ve received.

Success online is absolutely possible for ANYONE, if you’re willing to put in the work and be diligent through the process. Good to hear from you Erick and let me know if you ever need hand going through this stuff 🙂

There are more people starting their online businesses than ever before during this period, and that’s also why I recommend the training platform that’s free to get started for people.
