Let’s get to creating menus this lesson!
This lesson is all about organizing your website so that viewers can easily navigate around your website. Remember, our first goal is to drive traffic, but our second goal is to make sure that our readers stay on our website. If you don’t have a good looking website, they will just click away.
I repeat this every lesson, but it’s important to remember that you need to TAKE ACTION while you learn these lessons. Make sure you have created your FREE account and are following along the lesson. You can also go through this lesson once you’re signed up inside the platform.
By the end of this lesson, you’ll start seeing your website come together. Let’s get going!
Menus are simply links in the website that help you with guiding you through in the site. They are typically placed on top of the page, although some menus can be placed in other parts of the website too.
In getpaidworkingonline.com website, these are the menu buttons as of November 2020.
Menus are very simple and super easy to customize. If you are unfamiliar, it could look awkward and confusing, but let me assure you, once you understand the basics, you’ll be an expert in no time.
User experience is super important when it comes to sustaining a website and keeping traffic in your website. Remember how I said SEOs are the most vital when it comes to making money online in lesson 6?
Keeping the traffic engaged is the next most important thing!
Traffic DOES EQUAL revenue, however, Traffic WITHOUT ENGAGEMENT just results in putting all your hard work down the drain. The audience NEEDS to feel they can easily move around and get to where they need to get to without thinking too much.
If it looks too complicated, they will just click away.
Now that you understand menus, let’s get to sorting out your menus in your website. First thing you want to do is to hover over ‘Appearance’ in the left side bar. You’ll then see ‘Menus’ in the list – click on it!
Once you have selected both of them, click on ‘Add to menu’. After you’ve done that, it’ll add both your pages and your post into the ‘Menu Structure’.
Remember, you’re just getting started here. You’ll eventually add multiple layers in the menu and have sub-sections as well. You’ll learn more about it in higher levels so don’t worry about it for now.
You can name whatever you’d like for your menu. Eventually you’ll have multiple menus so it’ll help you keep an account of the menus when you have a few.
Now, you can go ahead and create your menu by clicking ‘create menu’.
For now, this menu will be our primary menu – or in other words, the menu that will show up on the top of the page. To make this the primary menu, you can look at the bottom of the ‘menu structure’ where you’ll see the option to make it the primary menu.
When you have multiple menus, they won’t all be primary menus. Hence, you also want to note down ‘manage locations’ at the top of the page. When you click on it, it’ll allow you to place this menu in different positions of the website.
But we’re just getting started here, so you won’t need to worry too much about it. Remember, this will all be talked about in future levels in the Wealthy Affiliate platform.
Once you click on ‘save changes’, your website will have have menus up! One page and one post. Wasn’t that easy? Can you see how gradually you can start building your website up?
Now, you may have the urge to place pages and posts in different places, but hold your horses for now. You will eventually get a chance to just roam around and try things on your own and build your brand.
For the purposes of this lesson, understand the full concept of menus and how to insert them. Once you have a good command of it, you can alter it in any way you feel it represents your brand!
That ENDS lesson 8!
Great work thus far! You’ve done incredibly well and moving along very smoothly. The fact that you’ve made it this far in the lesson means you’re committed and that’s exactly where only business begins.
