Lesson 3: Finding Your Niche Business

Niche is a simple term, but if you’re not used to hearing this word often, it’s easy to feel confused.

“Niche is a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service.”

– Oxford Languages

I Googled the word to get a definition, and Oxford Languages describes it that way. As it says, it’s essentially a little slice of the pie from the market. In simple terms, niche is what you want to sell or want to help with for the customers. Let’s dig further into niche.

Understanding Niche

As described above, a niche is a particular segment of the market that you choose to target. If you want to make money by selling other people’s stuff, you NEED to know what ‘stuff’ you will be selling and what kind of audience you’re targeting.

To keep in simple, when someone asks you ‘What is your niche?’, what they are really asking, in terms of affiliate marketing, is ‘What is your website about?’.

There are simply no wrong choices when selecting a niche. This is one thing that I really want to make sure you understand. A lot of times people worry too much about their niche that they forget to start all together.

Some people worry that all of their ideas are taken already, some worry that their idea won’t be good enough, others are just confused because there are too many options. These are all places that EVERYONE goes through. Remember, every successful marketer starts online business starts at a place of figuring out their niche. They are no different that you. Whether they started 2 months ago or 2 years ago, the anxiety is there for everyone.

One other thing I want to ingrain in your head right now. ANY niche will generate money. There are 4.7 billion and growing number of internet users daily. And you will undoubtedly find an audience for anything. In fact, the truth is, you actually need to narrow your niche as much as possible rather than thinking of a broad niche.

Let me explain what I’m talking about.

How To Find Your Niche?

Before you really dig into finding a niche, what I recommend you do is to think about a few topics that you’re interested in and think of ideas that you’d be happy to do research about. This will make it easier for you to get your first action steps started.

As you’re thinking about ideas, don’t be fixated on how much you already know about the topic. A lot of misconceptions that newbies have when they are starting out is they feel they need to be an expert in the field already. This is completely false!

But Parmi, how can I write about things that I don’t know about?

You don’t need to be an expert already, you BECOME an expert once you get started. You become an expert after you start doing research and giving your point of view to the audience. The BEST thing you have at this point is your perception of HOW you see that topic.

What IS and what IS NOT a Niche.

Okay, at this point, you have thought about a few ideas that you might be interested in. A lot of people starting off usually pick a niche that is too ‘broad’.

Examples of Broad Niches:

  • Running
  • Cars
  • Food
  • Electronics
  • How to be successful
  • Weight Loss
  • Environment

To give my own example, I started off by picking ‘running’ as my niche, only to soon realize there is too much to cover. Think about it in a way that you’ll be able to target a specific group of people. Yes, running or cars or food might be things that people want, but there’s still a very big array of people within those topics.

You could be researching on running to stay healthy when you’re over 60 or because you want to lose weight, or because you’re running a marathon or because you want to coach someone to run etc.

With cars, there are people that may look for wheels of the car, or how the engine works, or what kinds of car to buy, or what headlight they need, or how to change wheels, or how to repair car problems at home etc.

Do you get the idea? You could never cover all these topics as a single individual. There is also a group in the platform where they share their niche ideas so feel free to signup for FREE if you’d like to be a part of that.

Reading through this, if you feel that your idea is too big, see if you can further divide your topic into sub-topics or where you can categorize it into certain groups of people.

You can easily divide the ‘broader’ topics into something that’s manageable into a niche.

  • How to start running if I’ve never run before
  • Best foods to make at home
  • Remote work and travel
  • Cloud storage reviews
  • Ani-wrinkle remedies
  • Make additional income
  • Standup comedian guide
  • Eating Disorders
  • Compulsive lying
  • Camping Tips
  • Cycling for the lazy
  • Nail polish art
  • TV Screen reviews
  • Video game reviews
  • Recipes to stay on a diet
  • Living Room designs
  • Fast meal prep ideas
  • Energy saving solutions at home
  • Car parts
  • Electric cars
  • Water sports clothing
  • Sailing
  • Hiking guide

The above highlights some of the ideas that you could delve into, but there are 1000’s of ideas that you can get into. Feel free to click here to join the discussion and get suggestions. There are tons of very experienced members making six-seven figure incomes that you can get help from. I’ll also be available daily at this platform so you can also send me a private message.

Finding A Path

Okay, by now, you should have a full understanding of what a niche is and have some ideas about what idea to delve into. Here’s what I want you to do now. I want you to select an option right now so that you can get started. Select something that makes you the most excited and something that fits within the criteria of a ‘viable niche’.

Again, to re-iterate, there are NO WRONG NICHES! Anything can help you build a sustainable income online.

These are the points that I learned from Wealthy Affiliate when I started figuring out my niche, so I’ll share them with you too. Things to remember:

  • You will be the one doing research and writing content in the niche you select
  • You will be that person communicating, supporting and helping people in the niche you select
  • You will be the one that finds out products and services to promote in that niche
  • You will be the one that discusses the positives and negatives of that niche
  • You will be the one that will be updating on a regular basis so that you can help your readers

Keeping all these things in mind, select something. Be quick with this, don’t take forever to select. As I said before, A LOT of people just think too much here and don’t end up taking any action at all. Don’t be that person.

**Also remember, it’s completely normal for your niche to evolve once you get going. You don’t need to have a final version of your niche right now. Just select something that you’re excited to start right now.**

  1. This is the hardest bit when going through the training. What I found was that even if you are passionate on a topic, it’s hard to know if you can write a lot on it. Is my topic too broad, is it too narrow? I was confused a lot but eventually you figure out when you start asking people on their thoughts.

    • I agree with you David. I remember I was in the same dilemma when I started but the great thing as you go through this training is that there will be people and an entire community to support you to bounce off ideas and I will be your personal coach. That will definitely make it a lot easier going through the hurdle of finding a niche – it certainly helped out a lot to have that kind of support when I started for sure.

  2. I remember I overthought this a lot. I could not start anything because I was worried it was not good enough. What helped me was to just start without thinking much and eventually you understand what your brand should be about.

    • Haha, we are all in the same boat in the beginning. That’s why I appreciated the community a lot here in the platform because they always answered my questions super fast – I love the 24/7 live chat too. Thanks for sharing Cynthia 🙂

  3. Parmi can you go through your steps on how you came across a niche for your online business? I would love to hear from you who has managed to do well.

    • Sure Nelson. I actually went through the training and started to jot down things that I am interested in and want to learn more about. Once I did that, I started sharing with my personal coach and also getting into the discussion inside the platform. Soon after, I started a website and then it evolved as I also started to get a better grasp of the concepts.

Remember, niche is not something that you will figure out right away. It is just a general idea you have and that will evolve as you start building your content and YOUR brand. That’s why the community is so helpful because it truly supports you and gives you tons of ideas.

Plus, I’ve now been certified as a coach from Wealthy Affiliate – so I’ll be your personal coach once you start having your free website up and running.
